The Plaza Theatre opened this week,  bringing back our jewel—twinkling stars on the ceiling and all — with LGBTQ+ representation not lost on us:  Cynthia Erivo’s opening night; Lily Tomlin, John Waters and Fortune Feimster finish out the first week for a queer debut fitting for our city.

We turn our gaze north to another storied LGBTQ+ landmark theater: The Castro Theatre. San Francisco’s spiritual heart of the LGBTQ+ movement is set to roar back to life in February

The Castro isn’t just a movie palace; it’s an archive of queer history. For decades, it was the ground zero for community visibility and political action. It’s the place where Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, held rallies and screenings that energized the neighborhood and forever changed American politics. The theatre served as an anchor as Milk led the fight against anti-gay initiatives and solidified the Castro as a sanctuary.

The theatre’s auditorium was also the backdrop for pivotal moments for activists like Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, founders of the Daughters of Bilitis—the country’s first lesbian rights organization.

Like The Plaza Theatre, The Castro has its share of controversy: Namely, the decision to remove the fixed seating to allow for a flexible, flat floor for concerts and standing-room shows.  We were happy to have new comfortable seats at The Plaza, but we had our own kerfuffle over the front entrance easement needed for safety codes.  The renovation of the Castro by Another Planet Entertainment clocks in at $41 million, compared to the $37 reportedly spent to restore The Plaza.

Yet, despite the debate over the floor, the return of the venue is undeniably momentous. February 2026 will see the Castro—rebranded for booking purposes—open its doors with a lineup that balances music and film, including a major residency by Sam Smith and the return of the Frameline Film Festival in June.

It is a beautiful moment of synchronized revival in our progressive state of California. Our Plaza Theatre is now shimmering, proving that history can be fully restored and embraced. And soon, the Castro will be back, allowing new  and old generations to gather under its restored proscenium and continue the long, important tradition of LGBTQ+ cultural life that has defined both our communities.
