We’re about to hit middle age – 250 years old if we live to see 500. I’m wishing you a limp Happy 4th of July because, well, it just doesn’t feel like there’s much to celebrate.
If you remember the famous poem Casey at the Bat, it ends with the crushing line: “There is no joy in Mudville.” Right now, that’s exactly how this summer’s national milestone is starting to feel. Instead of a soaring home run that unites us, my mood — and that of the country — is a bit of a strikeout.
Here’s why, I think:
- Expectation vs. Reality: We all hoped this big anniversary of our freedoms would be a unifying moment of pride. Instead, we are seeing a wave of apathy. Many Americans—especially in our LGBTQ+ community—are feeling heavily conflicted and opting to sit this celebration out entirely.
- A Tale of Two Cities: Even the planning is deeply divided. Instead of one cohesive party, we have two competing factions pulling folks in different directions. You’ve got the congressionally authorized America 250 and the alternative, presidentially-backed Freedom 250. That celebration was a pure joke, and a Congressional investigation has found wrong-doing, according to The Guardian.
- The Overwhelming Melancholy: Just like the poem’s finale, a mix of anxiety and political division is casting a long shadow over our 4th of July festivities. Rather than a shared rally, the national energy feels fractured.
So, spoiler alert, here’s what happened to the mighty Casey:
Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout,
But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.
Just because the national vibe is a bit deflated doesn’t mean we can’t find our own joy right here in the Coachella Valley. While the Washington political spectacles miss the mark, we have many local, grassroots gatherings where the real magic happens. Celebrate in your own special way.
