“Houston. The Eagle has landed!” With those words, man’s first landing on the moon was communicated to the world this week some 56 years ago.

And now, “Cathedral City. An Eagle is landing” was heard across the valley on social media over the weekend. Yes, the rumor is apparently true. The former Barracks Bar will have a new life as Eagle Cathedral City. There’s a basic website and Facebook page, and it’s waaay past April Fool’s Day.

The Eagle brand had a short-lived place on Arenas before switching to “Dick’s on Arenas”. It seems that the space was a little too public for what an Eagle bar is all about. And of course, the Eagle brand lives throughout the world with bars sharing the name in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Amsterdam, and even Japan. (At least those are the ones I’ve visited!)

Too bad it wasn’t set up as a franchise. Someone would be rich by now. But the number of Eagle bars has waxed and waned over the years, now down to around 30, according to NBC News. The first was “The Eagle’s Nest” in New York City. And Cathedral City will be the next, it appears.

The former “Barracks Bar” was closed just one year ago amid ABC violation allegations.

P.S. Happy 50th this week to our DJ Galaxy, one of the most beloved men in our community. His actual birthday is Friday, but all week he’s “celebrating” by, of course, giving back. You can hear all about it on his Retro Lunch show on KGAY radio this Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12 noon. He’s giving back by doing a food drive, spinning at Hunters for Fur Friday and hosting our “All Out Summer Dance Party” benefiting the Center on Saturday night. He’s our “Energizer Bunny” and we’re glad to have him a part of the KGay Desert Guide family!
