This weekend, a new book festival will debut in Palm Springs. We got behind Jason Blickman’s OUTspoken for a number of reasons. But most important is that the free flow of information, sharing stories and “challenging societal norms” is a good thing especially with the advent of “fake news”.
In 1960, psychiatrist and author Robert Lipton studied survivors of Chinese communist brainwashing and what he found was ground-breaking. Cult leaders don’t just control what their followers think, they control whether their followers think at all.
In his book, Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of “Brainwashing” in China, Lipton coined the phrase “Thought Stopping”. Here’s how it works: The human brain is always scanning for information that might threaten its survival. So a cult leader will plant a response inside of the follower’s head. The second the ‘threatening thought’ appears, that phrase or response fires automatically, and the brain shuts off before any contrary thought can form.
Lipton’s writes that Trump did this the same way every cult leader does – with repetition. Trump said “fake news“ over 2000 times on his first term alone. And it wasn’t because he believed it, but because he was programming a response. He attached the phrase “fake news” to fear and anger, and repeated it until the brain of his followers believed it.
A journalist or author can spend hours building a story by gathering sources, collecting evidence and making their case. But a Trump supporter kills off any logic with those two words. Before a rational argument even registers in their brain, it’s DOA. This is the same technique used in every cult Lipman ever studied. And it works because the followers have no idea it’s even happening to them. They genuinely believes they are thinking.
As a child, I remember that there was a public service campaign for RIF – Reading Is Fundamental. Nearly 60 years on, the non-profit still works to provide books to at-risk children so that they may be free thinking, educated and entertained through literature.
But reading alone can’t overcome the inculcation of a cult leader.
That’s why showing up at this weekend’s “No Kings” rally is important. And so is supporting a free press, and attending events like OUTspoken, and next week’s Palm Springs Speaks. Knowledge is power, and knowing the levers that are being pulled to tear down our news organizations and our country is one step in fighting back.
