Imagine the traffic nightmare that a Paul McCartney concert or a Firebirds game would have generated for downtown Palm Springs.

Or imagine driving toward Indian Canyons hiking trails and instead of the vista of Oswit Canyon you saw luxury homes and a cement retention basin.

Citizens have power to change what sometimes appears to be a foregone conclusion. In the case of Acrisure Arena, there was enough public outcry — and behind-the-scenes finagling — to change the outcome. And a chance encounter by Jane Garrison with another hiker in 2016 set in motion a movement to Save Oswit Canyon.

Sunday night, Oswit Land Trust held their 5th anniversary to celebrate a number of victories over their short existence. They, along with Mayor Ron deHarte, have an urgent plea to residents about a new project that threatens our community. It’s a massive warehouse behemoth that was set to be railroaded through this week.

Desert Mountain View Business Park, is planned on 217 acres of Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians trust land west of Tipton Road, south of Interstate 10 and north of Highway 111.

According to today’s Palm Springs Post, Palm Springs City Council has no authority to veto the project, as it is on tribal land. We are rightly up in arms about such a massive project at the gateway to Palm Springs. The tribe can do what they wish — like when the arena was first placed in downtown Palm Springs.

The Post reports that Mayor deHarte has already asked the city manager to request that the tribe host a community meeting and also asked about pulling the item from the December 10th Council agenda. He goes on to say: “The most critical action you can take [right now] is submitting your formal comments.”

We’ve linked to the article and the email address to which you can send comments. Let’s hope that public outcry will again outweigh developers’ pocketbooks and we can avoid another project that tears away at the fabric of what makes Palm Springs “like no place else!”
