My alarm went off just before 5 am today. Sometimes I’m up that early, but today it was appointment listening to my hometown radio station in Hastings, Michigan, where my career began 51 years ago.
That pales in comparison to my mentor, Dave McIntyre, who today retired from WBCH radio at age 85. He and my parents went to school together, raised their families and served their community — it’s a small town. Dave was the morning host and newsman for my entire lifetime. And I thought my tenure in this business was long. He took me under his wing when I was hired to run the Sunday morning church services and do news and weather at age 15.

I saw Dave when I was visiting in July and used their studio to record my Saturday 103.1 MeTVFM radio show. The place hadn’t changed much. Burlap still lined the newsroom wall with nails where we used to “peg” teletype news copy for editing.
Just when I’m starting to contemplate “retirement”, I look at Dave and see that I’ve got a long road ahead to match his tenure. I’m not sure I have 19 years left in me, but I do hope to stay involved and active in our great LGBTQ+ community for many more years.
What we’ve got going on in “community” here in Greater Palm Springs is totally different from what you’d find in a small rural town in Michigan, thanks to our diversity and, yeah, some “wokeness” vibes. I really appreciate where I came from and my upbringing, but honestly, I love living and serving here the most.
