While it’s a honor to be honored, it’s a little tough to think of myself as an “LGBTQ+ elder pioneer”. That’s the official designation of my S.A.G.E. award being given to me today at Living Out by the non-profit organization.
My career in LGBTQ+ media started having been a part of one of the first such radio stations in America. It was called LesBiGay Radio and we brokered time on two suburban Chicago radio stations to broadcast a daily afternoon drive show. It featured a rotating set of hosts, including Honey West and Alexandra Billings.
I also produced the first morning show for Sirius Satellite Radio on their ground-breaking OutQ with Cary Harrison from Los Angeles. Later, when employed by Clear Channel/IHeartRadio, I was placed in charge of Pride Radio. That’s when John Taylor and I started working together as he produced features for the channel. (PrideRadio is still operating, though it recently was hit with staff reductions like our former competitor, ChannelQ.)
Corporate radio talks a big game about diversity and inclusion, but when times are tough it was the first place to cut. I know: I didn’t survive many of those downsizings. But that led me to start Gay Desert Guide some 13 years ago. So when QChella Media was formed, I was tapped as a board member and general manager to start up KGAY. We launched in Christmas Day 2018. After a year, Chris Shebel, John Taylor and I left over “Creative Differences”. When COVID was waning, I made a deal with the owners to purchase and resurrect KGAY to what we’ve created today.
So after all that, I guess I am somewhat of an “elder” in this media space. And I wouldn’t have traded any of those corporate gigs for what I’ve created here with Gay Desert Guide and KGAY radio. I look forward to receiving the award today, and even more so to what lies ahead in my “golden years”.
