Erection and construction are in the news in Greater Palm Springs. Erection first…

The Pride Landmark Flagpole will start to break ground shortly at the southwest corner of Arenas and Indian Canyon and Mayor Ron deHarte is pushing for completion in time for Palm Springs Pride and maybe even Leather Pride. The City has approved funding and installing a 65’ landmark flagpole. Only certain flags can be flown with deference to the US Flag at major federal holidays.

Then there’s all the construction buzz happening around Eagle Cathedral City opening this Fall. A preview on Newschannel 3 last night provided an inside look at the renovation — key among them new restrooms. The owners have made it clear that they will follow liquor control laws that got previous owners into hot water. But it also takes a little restraint on our “citizen’s” part — bars are not bath houses.

Our K-Gay Desert Guide team got a sneak peak at a new LGBTQ+ theatre space as The Prism Theatre will open this fall next to Sherman’s Deli in downtown Palm Springs. According to their website, “The Prism Theater is more than just a stage — it’s a place where creativity shines, voices are heard, and everyone belongs”. It’s a new venture of Desert Theatreworks in Indio.

Ron and Lance Phillips have been operating the former IPAC as Desert Theatreworks since 2017 and have transformed that space into an east valley performing arts venue with award-winning shows. Prism will be an intimate space with a lineup that will be sure to find its niche in the Palm Springs performing arts scene.

Michael Shaw at Dezart Performs reports that the new stage is poured for their new Dezart Playhouse. Dezart Performs purchased the Robson Chambers/Albert Frey-designed First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Palm Springs and is transforming it into their new home. But it will also be used by other organizations. I saw that building as demolition was happening a few months ago, and marveled at the great bones and how well it will convert from church to state…

And of course, The Plaza Theatre reno is hurling forward with a December 1 opening show (yet to be announced), followed by a stellar lineup that extends well into 2026. (I’m looking forward to Billy Porter!)

J.R. Roberts is assuring us that the venue will open on time, though according to recent news reports costs continue to rise. Fundraising has been robust, but delays like the unnecessary lawsuit by GRIT Development haven’t helped.

All-in-all, the number of butts in seats needed to fill all these venues will be substantial. But with 14 million day and overnight visitors to the valley each year, there are plenty of cheeks to keep those seats warm.
