Same Time, Next Year is the story of annual infidelity that starred Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn. It takes us on a journey where each character evolves over their lifetime, but still meet for an annual tryst through thick and thin.
I had a version of that in my early gay life when I was “saved” by a group of gay men at the Gay 90’s Bar in Minneapolis. I was by myself and not fully out, so they noticed my nervousness — and my lack of defense against an unwanted suitor. I went home with one of them and that started an annual meet up that lasted a number of years.
Then in 2006, my radio friends and I went to Amsterdam. We hit an opulent bathhouse (no longer there) for an evening of fun. I met Gerben, a native Netherlander, with whom I had a great evening talking, fooling around and getting to know each other. So much so that I invited him over the next evening too. We shared contact info.
Fast forward to last weekend as I was ending my Amsterdam Pride trip with BearCruise.com. He and I had stayed in touch over the years, and had tried to meet up again but to no avail. This year was different. But it wasn’t for the prurient pleasures, we genuinely wanted to see each other and see how our lives had progressed.
He shared a fascinating story of his father’s version of Same Time, Next Year – but in a non-sexual way. While visiting Malaysia in the 70’s with his family, Gerben’s dad befriended one of the hotel workers. As they visited in subsequent years, the two families got to know each other and became intertwined. His father helped the family’s two girls through college. They visited each other in their native lands until his father’s passing.
And that explains why Gerben and I, after all these years, reconnected for a trip down memory lane. We had seen this movie before.
