As a board member of the LGBTQ+ History & Archives of the Desert, we’ve been gathering remembrances and remnants of our past – from matchbooks to magazines – that relate to the rich history of Greater Palm Springs.
Other than the individual LGBTQ Walk of Stars that we’ve identified and placed in the app, there are no memorials or monuments to our people that come to mind. That’s about to change.
You’ve likely heard about the AIDS Memorial that is planned for our Downtown Park. That project is back on track after listening sessions with the artist and a “back to the drawing board” for a new design.
But do you know about the Arenas flag pole (similar to that of San Diego’s Hillcrest District) that’s being planned? And the Pride Monument in Frances Stevens Park? Both are making progress for funding and community support. The latter is open for discussion at a community meeting and conceptual introduction next week at Hunters.
When it’s all said and done, we’ll have many places where visitors can celebrate and remember the rich LGBTQ+ history of #ILoveGayPalmSprings. Happy Pride Month!
