Be You was the theme for Palm Springs Pride this year – and it lived up to its theme. I love the free expression of gender identity, kinks, fetishes and support that is shown throughout the weekend – and especially at the parade.
We heard comments about how safe and included visitors felt being here in our bubble. But we know that outside this land of Oz things are a little more like Kansas.
In Monday’s Los Angeles Times, an article titled “Trump’s culture of retribution has swept through American life” (paywall) gives me pause in the election week.
Essentially, it chronicles everyday people trying to do their jobs as poll workers, teachers, librarians and other upholders of our laws and constitution. They are fighting the culture of hate, retribution and violence that been amped up this cycle. That causes a chilling effect on many, and has given rise to threats, especially from white males, according to the article.
We celebrated Pride like — as Prince once sang — like it was 1999. Let’s just hope that after the election it’s not like the lyrics his song and the party’s over:
Everybody’s got a bomb
We could all die any day, aw
But before I’ll let that happen
I’ll dance my life away, oh-oh-oh
They say, 2000-00, party over
Oops, out of time
We’re runnin’ outta time
So tonight we gonna party like it’s 1999
